MCS Workshop: Advanced Therapies in Heart Failure
Wednesday, June 22, 2011

The purpose of this workshop is to provide the attendees with a general overview of the Advanced Heart Failure patient who is failing medical therapy and might benefit from Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS). Sessions will include indicators and timing of referral, review of currently available devices and an algorithm for determining which device is most appropriate. Common complications and assessment of patients dependent on MCS will be explored. There will also be hands on time with the devices.

All attendees will receive handouts, screening tools, discharge information and pre-op evaluation tools for the care of this patient population. There will also be online sites made available, along with Device company representatives to answer more specific questions during the break times.

The educational content will be presented by Assist Device nurse and physician experts who have been practicing in this field for many years. There will be time for questions and answers at the end of each session.

Objectives

At the end of the program the participant will be able to:

  • Identify 2 indicators for referral for MCS evaluation
  • Describe function and goal of MCS devices in the treatment of advanced heart failure
  • Identify three common complications associated with MCS
